Dear Editor,As an Everett, I was irate to learn that my family’s name was used in an attempt to smear a political candidate. The Everetts were long time residents of Wilmington. My mother ran a successful dancing school and donated proceeds to help build the Health Center. My father volunteered for years in Little League, Pony League and Pop Warner. He helped to build the Little League field by the Police Station and a skating rink behind the South School. I grew up in Wilmington and taught for 30+ years as Miss Everett, Mrs. Mosca, or Mrs. Farrar.The name Jack Everett comes from the Urban Dictionary. As copied from the Urban Dictionary:“Jack Everett – a strong leader that sticks up for other people and he will always put others first. lovely eyes and hair. good at sports, he isn’t arrogant, girls drop even when he is standing. he will fight to protect his friends and family”Perhaps, the person who hid behind a cartoon character and our name sees this as themselves. However, I question their integrity. Our family will fight to protect our friends and family, which is why I am writing this. We do not want to be attached to negative campaigns.For 63 of my years, I have lived and/or worked in Wilmington. I am invested in Wilmington. Cam McLaren / Getty Images It’s been over a month since a gunman opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 50 people and livestreaming the massacre on Facebook. It appears the social network, as well as Facebook-owned Instagram, is still showing videos of the attack, according to a Friday report by Motherboard. Some of the videos on the platforms are shorter clips of the original 17-minute footage, the report says. One video on Facebook showing the gunman killing people from a first-person perspective says it potentially contains “violent or graphic content,” but remains on the platform, according to Motherboard. Users can reportedly click to confirm they want to watch the video. “We have designated both shootings as terror attacks, meaning that any praise, support and representation of the events violates our Community Guidelines and is not permitted on Instagram.,” a company representative said. “We will continue to remove these videos from our platform.” Facebook didn’t respond to a request for comment.Facebook has struggled to keep footage of the mass shooting off its site. The social network was criticized after its artificial intelligence systems couldn’t automatically detect video of the terrorist attack. Facebook relies heavily on user reports to flag inappropriate content, and says it didn’t get a report during the live broadcast. The first user report came 12 minutes after the livestream ended, wrote Guy Rosen, vice president of product management, in a blog post last month. It can also be challenging to remove variations of the footage, according to Motherboard. Some videos reportedly showed a screen recording of the content playing on the gunman’s Facebook page, while another featured a person watching part of the clip on Twitter. The social network told Motherboard that it’s “also using audio technology to try and detect clips of the attack.” After it takes down that content, Facebook adds the variations to a list of content to block automatically. The Xbox Game Pass for PC will launch at a $1 introductory monthly price. Microsoft Microsoft revealed the pricing and initial game release for its Xbox Game Pass for PC ahead of its Xbox press conference at E3 on Sunday. Gamers can join the beta for the subscription-based service gaming for $5 per month for a limited time. Members will receive a 30-day notice before this introductory period ends and Xbox Game Pass for PC reverts to its standard price of $9.99 per month.The service will include access to at least 10 games during its beta phase, including Halo: The Master Chef Collection and Gears 5, each of which is listed as “coming soon.”Microsoft has slowly been making Xbox more integrated with Windows, and support for Game Pass on PC is yet another example. Microsoft is expected to discuss a wide range of new games and initiatives during its Xbox press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET). India’s largest IT services company Tata Consultancy Services is reportedly planning staff restructuring exercise potentially covering 25,000 senior employees. Every vertical has been asked to evaluate the senior staff, including senior consultants, principal consultants, vice-presidents and above to identify the more productive ones, company sources said.The workforce optimisation programme, which is said to be in its planning stage, will most probably be over by February 2015.At least 25, 000 employees, both from onsite and offsite locations, are likely to come face the evaluation.”These are employees with around 20 years of experience and some 25,000 employees could fall in this category. They would be reviewed during the process which will get over by February 2015, before the next appraisal cycle starts from March,” Business Standard quoted the sources as saying.A TCS spokesperson said: “As a performance-driven company, workforce optimisation is a continuous process, which happens throughout the year, taking into account employee performance, business needs, and people aspirations. This leads to some amount of involuntary attrition in the company. This is nothing out of the ordinary or a special situation for us to comment about.” The optimisation programme is however not going to affect the freshers and junior-level employees, according to an executive.The spokesperson said that the programme is nothing unusual or new, the evaluation of employees goes on throughout the year. The company said it will instead be hiring 55, 000 professionals in the fiscal year 2016.Some analysts said this drive is a new trend being incorporated into the system by several other companies such as Infosys and Wipro. “Around one to two per cent of involuntary attrition happens in almost all the companies and TCS is not an exception. The overall numbers at TCS may be more pronounced due to its size,” an analyst told BS on condition of anonymity.At the end of the second quarter ended 30 September, TCS had total 3,13,757 employees, including gross addition of 20,000.

Now, with that job largely accomplished, Saudi Arabia and Russia are reportedly pressuring OPEC members to open up the floodgates again.The cartel has also faced pressure from President Donald Trump, who railed against “too high” oil prices on Twitter this month, seemingly blaming the OPEC cuts.Wood Mackenzie oil analyst Ann-Louise Hittle said the outcome of the meeting is still “highly uncertain,” but there are three distinct possibilities:OPEC could maintain its current oil cuts agreement, which would still lead to weaker oil prices closer to 2019, as U.S. production continues growing.The organization, along with Russia, could agree to “moderate” combined oil increases of less than 1 million barrels/day in 2019, which would keep Brent crude prices hovering around $71/barrel through 2018.The meeting could lead to a “dramatic” increase of about 1.5 million barrels/day, which would “significantly” weaken global oil prices and lead to lower gas prices in the U.S. (This would be good news for President Trump, Hittle notes.)The firm said a moderate OPEC move is likely. He and his colleagues are interested in using so-called disordered material to create lasers that could increase our understanding of physics – as well as make the laser creation process simpler. Tanaka points out that silver nanoparticles make a difference: “First, localized optical modes near silver nanoparticle surface provide high optical gain for lasing. Second, scattering properties can be flexibly controlled by the size and shape of nanoparticles, and significantly contribute to light transport in random systems compared to that in dielectric nanoparticles.”In terms of application, Tanaka sees possibilities for fundamental physics knowledge, as well as practical uses for this set-up. “Since the phenomena of random laser are reported for systems having very different scattering strength from nearly transparent to highly-scattering media, it is possible that the laser mechanism — or dominating laser mode — is different depending on the scattering strength. Thus the primal importance is to clarify the mechanism, which is beneficial to the progress of the physics.”As far as practical applications, he says that there is a strong possibility of a compact laser. Plus, Tanaka continues, “Since this type of lasers does not require rigorous alignment of reflectors to form cavity in contrast to the conventional Fabry-Perot type ones, the making process is much simpler.”The team at Kyoto continues to work on this project. Tanaka and his coworkers say that more needs to be known with regard to how the distribution of the silver nanoparticles within the polymer affects the laser. Their work can be seen in Applied Physics Letters: “Random lasers with coherent feedback from highly transparent polymer films embedded with silver nanoparticles.”“Random lasers are laser sources that arise from multiple scattering events in random systems so that the strength of light scattering is of large importance in determining the feedback type of laser oscillation, Tanaka explains. “We are interested in such lasers because their fabrication process is technically simple while high gain is involved. At present, researchers are focusing on random lasers based on dielectrics with high refractive index, while little attention has been paid to metal nanostructures-based amplifying random media.” He continues: “Actually, metal nanostructures are rather potential materials in laser devices. The use of surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures is extremely attractive because they bring about surface enhanced Raman scattering, enhancement of spontaneous emission, and amplified spontaneous emission, and so on. What we have consisdered for a long time is whether laser actions with high gain could be achieved by combining metal nanostructures and laser working medium.”Indeed, this led Tanaka and his peers to wonder if surface plasmon resonance can help random lasing. The answer, in their minds, is yes: “We found that the presence of silver nanoparticles results in the coherent output even though the scattering strength of the system is very weak. We believe that surface plasmon plays an important role in the laser operation.”In order to make the demonstration work, the Kyoto team embedded silver nanoparticles on highly transparent polymer films. The process was made possible through the in situ method, in which heat is used to create the hybrid material, combining polymer with metal in a way that is useful in terms of lasing. “We have calculated the transport mean free path of our sample and found that it is far larger than the sample size. The light propagates in such systems nearly freely without resistance,” Tanaks says. “Then, the issue that puzzles us is this: What on earth induces laser oscillation?”
