Armstrong returned a negative test on arrival at Scotland’s Oriam training base but the supplementary UEFA test came back positive on Wednesday morning. Rotary Club launches initiative to reclaim Nature Island

first_img Share Tweet LocalNews Rotary Club launches initiative to reclaim Nature Island by: – March 13, 2012 Share 62 Views   no discussionscenter_img Share Sharing is caring! President of the Club Marvlyn Birmingham presenting bio-degradable bag to Arlene Hall of Save-A-Lot.The Rotary Club of Dominica has partnered with the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, the Environmental Coordinating Unit and the three local supermarkets on island to reduce the use of plastic and to reclaim the nature island. The Club launched this environmental project at a press conference on Tuesday with a view to educating the public on the negative effects which plastics have on the society as well as to reduce the amount of plastic bags currently being used and replace them with bio-degradable shopping bags.Past President of the Rotary Club Marie-Jose Edwards explained the importance of this environmental project to the island.“There are two major components of this project; one is the distribution of bio-degradable shopping bags to the supermarkets that are involved and also indirectly and directly to the consumers and to undertake an extensive public awareness program.”Edwards noted that “we are the stewards of the environment” and it is therefore every citizen’s responsibility to ensure that they play their part in “conserving its resources”.She recognized that “plastics are a very important part of our lives” but highlighted the Club’s objective to inform the public of the “negative impact” which plastics have on the environment.“The whole idea is to encourage them to use reusable plastic bags and to reduce their use of plastics,” Edwards said. The Club has formally written to most of the major supermarkets on the island however so far only three have responded favorably.Marie-Jose EdwardsThey are; A C. Shillingford and Company, H. H. V. Whitchurch and Company and Save-A-Lot Supermarket and a representative of each company was present at the press conference.Head of production division at H. H. V. Whitchurch, Geoff Astaphan congratulated the Club for launching this “very important initiative” which he said everyone should take very seriously and play their part in curtailing the use of plastics on island. He informed that his company has been making an effort to “save the environment” and will distribute the bio-degradable bags during their mid-month madness on Wednesday along with Whitchurch IGA re-usable bags.Arlene Hall of Save-A-Lot also commended the Club for implementing “such an important program.” She explained that prior to being contacted by the Club she noticed during a tour of the island that “Save-A-Lot shopping bags has been contributing to unsightly scenes” and thanked the Club for playing a role in trying to keep the environment clean. Hall also announced that her company will launch a green initiative later this month which will comprise of a green day where about 1000 bio-degradable bags will be distributed to consumers. Plastics are made from petroleum products, natural gas and they utilize non-renewable resources helping to drive up the fuel prices and they take between 15 to 1000 years to decompose.Plastics are at risk of photo degradation, light exposure dissolving them to toxic polymer particles and once these polymer particles are present in the soil they pose a threat to the water table, animals and humans. Former past president Edwards also provided statistics on Dominica’s importation of plastics in 2007 which was 299, 000 kilos amounting to EC$2.4 million and 318, 000 kilos in 2009 which amounted to EC$2.9 million.Coordinator of the project and Rotarian Annie Edwards thanked the Rotary Club of Borden, Ohio which contributed 1150 of the bags to the Club.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more

Guardiola in need of Tottenham turnaround

first_img“It is a good challenge for us. You have to live as a club, as players if we can do that,” said Guardiola after the first leg.“We have a second game. It looks a little more complicated but every day, every hour is going to pass we will see it closer.”Guardiola is also under the spotlight after he was accused of again over-thinking his team selection and tactics in the Champions League after defeat in north London last week.It is now 10 games and eight years since a Guardiola side won an away Champions League quarter or semi-final, despite boasting three immensely talented teams in Barca, Bayern and City.Guardiola made his name in winning the competition twice among 14 trophies in four golden years at Barcelona. His three years at Bayern also produced domestic dominance in three Bundesliga titles and two German cups, but was coloured by three Champions League semi-final exits to Real Madrid, Barca and Atletico Madrid.Failure to even reach the last four in his first three seasons at City would see his credentials as a Champions League specialist further diminished.Against Tottenham, it’s time for his “teenagers” to come of age on the biggest stage. Pep Guardiola Manchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Manchester City remain in contention for a historic haul of four trophies this season, but winning the one by which Pep Guardiola’s time at the Etihad will be judged depends on overturning a 1-0 Champions League quarter-final, first leg deficit against Tottenham on Wednesday.City’s long-term pursuit of Guardiola has delivered what it promised domestically.Premier League records for points, goals and wins were smashed in romping to the title last season.Guardiola’s men are on course to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League despite Liverpool, 18 times English champions, posting what is likely to be a club record points tally.City have already retained the League Cup and will be heavy favourites to claim more silverware when they face Watford in next month’s FA Cup final. However, the far less heralded Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini also won Premier League titles in the decade since the club’s Abu Dhabi backers began pouring in billions of pounds of investment. The grand plan was for Guardiola to lead City to the promised land in the Champions League, which so far he has failed to do.The Catalan has constantly used City’s lack of history in European football as a shield. Should the English champions turn the Tottenham tie around, it will be just their second ever appearance in the semi-finals.“We are teenagers in this competition,” said Guardiola before his side swotted aside Schalke 7-0 in the second leg of their last 16 tie.Yet, it is not Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich that have dumped City out in Guardiola’s first two seasons, but Monaco and Liverpool.Bowing out to a Spurs side 16 points behind City in the league and that spend nearly half the wage bill of Guardiola’s squad would leave a significant stain on an almost flawless season to this point.
