DOHA, Qatar:Finishing sixth in the final at the World Championships is a very creditable achievement, especially for a 21-year-old competing for the first time on such a big stage. But though Omar McLeod just that last season, many expected more given the form that he showed going into the final.”Last year, my legs were shot at World Championships, and that was because I was racing competitively every single week as a collegiate athlete,” McLeod explained. “So definitely, that took a toll on my legs, and I got hurt before the World Outdoor Championships.”McLeod, now 22, is fast out of the blocks this season, again winning gold at the World Indoors before running 9.99 seconds in the 100m to create history as he is the first athlete to run under 10 seconds for the 100m and 13 seconds for the 110 m hurdles. With no collegiate commitments this season, he is assuring that he will not fade come Olympics.”This year, we are a lot smarter in competition. We are not competing every single week as this year is kind of a defrosting year,” McLeod said. “So this year, I will be doing more competitive races, and that will definitely get me sharp for Rio. I want to be in the middle (gold medal podium), so that’s the goal.”SURPRISED TIMEThe former Manchester High and Kingston College student admitted that he, too, was stunned by his sub-10 100m clocking, which was achieved last month at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville with a 2.0 metres per second wind. That was McLeod’s first competitive 100m outing since becoming a senior.”I knew I had speed, but I didn’t know I had speed of that sort. You can call that my first 100m ever,” McLeod told The Gleaner. “Though I haven’t done a lot of speed work, I just wanted to get sharp before opening, so my coach was like, ‘Go run a 100m just to get your feet wet’, and I really didn’t know what was going on in the race. I really didn’t execute it good. I just went in the blocks and ran, to be honest, and the time came. So it was definitely a shocker.”McLeod knows he will not only face strong competition on the circuit, but also at the Jamaican trials next month when he is scheduled to line up beside World and Olympic medallist Hansle Parchment and Andrew Riley.”It is always exciting competing with those guys because every time I line up with them, you can always expect a great race,” McLeod email@example.com

As if on cue, Internet pranksters hijacked the contest. Not content with stuffing the virtual ballot box, they defaced the contest website with videos, offensive banners and in-jokes.PepsiCo, maker of Mountain Dew, shut down the “Dub the Dew” contest site early Monday morning. The soft drink company was by no means the first victim of the notoriously juvenile Web community known as 4chan.The hijinks began as a post on 4chan’s infamous /b/ discussion board that put out a call to take part in Operation: Gushing Granny. The operation’s stated mission was to name the new Apple-flavored drink “Gushing Granny.”A /b/ user shared 4chan’s digital mayhem on the social news site Reddit early Sunday evening under the title “/b/ Destroys Another Online Contest.” The post hit Reddit’s front page within hours. From there, the contest attracted a wider audience of miscreants, as reflected by the top contest names. “Hitler Did Nothing Wrong” and “Diabeetus” soon became the top voted names. One audience member offered to raffle a virtual hat in a popular multiplayer online game in return for votes for his Mountain Dew name submission, drawing new waves of voters both for and against it. NEW DELHI: After shooting down a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite with its indigenously developed Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) weapon, India is now a reckoning space power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address to the nation. On March 27, at 11:16 am, India successfully launched its A-SAT weapon that targetted an Indian satellite which had been decommissioned and was orbiting an LEO at a height of 300 km from Earth’s surface. DRDO’s Ballistic Missile Interceptor, a part of the ongoing ballistic missile defence programme, was deployed. The team of scientists was able to accomplish the task of locating, destroying and confirming the destruction of said satellite within three minutes. Mission Shakti deserves celebration as this is the first time that India has tested and successfully demonstrated its capability to interdict and intercept a satellite in outer space based on complete indigenous technology. Rightly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this is ‘a proud moment’ for Indians. A-SAT weapons play a crucial role in locating, intercepting and destroying incoming satellite that may threaten national security. However, the sphere of space weapons is contentious. Strict guidelines are enforced under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, of which India is a signatory. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from ThursdayThe treaty strongly prohibits the use of weapons of mass destruction in space. However, with its A-SAT weapon, India has been careful to not overstep any points of the treaty. India has also expressed support to the substantive consideration of Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS) in the Conference on Disarmament, where it has been on agenda since 1982. Clearly, India’s intent is less offensive and more a defensive tool of strengthening national security and propelling the development of greater space technology. Earlier, China’s test in 2007 received widespread criticism from the global community, which iterated that the Dragon’s attempt to launch A-SAT weapons had “serious consequences of engaging in the militarisation of space”.
Alipurduar: BJP president Amit Shah said Friday his party will replicate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in West Bengal on coming to power at the Centre to “throw out” infiltrators. He, however, made it clear that Hindu refugees will not be touched. “We will also bring in NRC in Bengal and throw out all inflitrators. We will also ensure that the Hindu refugees are not touched. They are very much a part of our country,” Shah said. It, however, became a hugely contentious issue after the complete draft, released last year, omitted the names of lakhs of people who have been residing in the state for several decades. The BJP president also said the upcoming Lok Sabha polls are all about restoring democracy in the TMC-ruled West Bengal. “The TMC stands for three Ts -Trinamool, toll and tax. Under the TMC government, syndicates (groups of extortionists) are flourishing in Bengal,” he claimed. They want to hold talks with Pakistan. In this election, you have two ways – one leads you to Narendra Modi, the other to Thugbandhan (a gang of thugs) of leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav,” Shah said.
