14 May 2014 South Africa and Mozambique held a follow-up meeting in Pretoria on Wednesday after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on combating rhino poaching and other wildlife crime last month. A draft implementation plan was discussed at the meeting, which includes initiatives such as anti-poaching measures, fundraising, wildlife trafficking, community development, and raising awareness about the plight of the rhino. The implementation of the MoU in the field of Biodiversity Conservation and Management is expected to be finalised by the end of July. The two countries also agreed that the ministers responsible for the implementation of the MoU, South African Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa and Mozambican Tourism Minister Carvalho Muaria, would meet annually to discuss progress and identify areas for further cooperation. The steps being taken by the two countries since June 2013 on the matter of cross-border conservation of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area to address rhino poaching include: A total of 106 people have been arrested for rhino poaching-related offences since January this year. The Kruger National Park continues to bear the brunt of rhino poaching in South Africa, having lost 245 rhino so far this year. The only province not affected by poaching this year has been the Northern Cape. A total of 39 rhino have been poached in Limpopo, 37 in KwaZulu-Natal and 26 in North West province. South Africans are urged to report incidents of poaching and tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 0860 010 111 or Crime-Line on 32211. This year proved to be a strong one for online employment, as more and more took to the Web to find work, where an increasing number of jobs are for employers in other geographic areas, according to a report released by Elance.Elance reported its one-millionth job listing, as an annually-growing number of job seekers and freelancers use the site to find work. In total, the site saw 375,000 new listings in 2010, a 40% increase from last year. Web workers are cumulatively now earning over $100 million per year through the site. While these trends are specific to Elance, they tell us something about the job market as a whole, which is clearly becoming more mobile and distributed as technology continues to enable that shift. Elance highlights the explosion of mobile computing by reporting that the number of businesses posting mobile development jobs grew by 98% this year. In one of its more interesting breakdowns, the report outlines which skills grew in demand this year and which ones appear to be on their way out. Search engine marketing topped the list of “hot” skills for 2010, followed by iPhone development, Google App Engine, HTML5 and affiliate marketing. The soft drink company was by no means the first victim of the notoriously juvenile Web community known as 4chan.The hijinks began as a post on 4chan’s infamous /b/ discussion board that put out a call to take part in Operation: Gushing Granny. The operation’s stated mission was to name the new Apple-flavored drink “Gushing Granny.”A /b/ user shared 4chan’s digital mayhem on the social news site Reddit early Sunday evening under the title “/b/ Destroys Another Online Contest.” The post hit Reddit’s front page within hours. From there, the contest attracted a wider audience of miscreants, as reflected by the top contest names. “Hitler Did Nothing Wrong” and “Diabeetus” soon became the top voted names. One audience member offered to raffle a virtual hat in a popular multiplayer online game in return for votes for his Mountain Dew name submission, drawing new waves of voters both for and against it. Mahant Bhaskar Das, the main litigant in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case, passed away in Ayodhya on September 16. He was 89.The seer, head of Nirmohi Akhada, was a petitioner in the case since 1959. He was admitted to a private medical facility on September 12 following breathing problems where he later suffered a brain stroke. The seer will be cremated at the Tulsi ghat in Ayodhya later on September 16, close associates told IANS.Doctors had earlier advised that he be taken to a super-speciality hospital either in Lucknow or Delhi. However, the ageing priest refused to leave the temple town. Faizabad MP Lallu Singh, former UPCC president Nirmal Khatri and several local BJP and RSS leaders besides others paid their homage to the seer. All shops in the Hanumangarhi area in Ayodhya have downed their shutters as a mark of respect. The seer’s disciples recalled that he had cordial relations with Hashim Ansari, the oldest litigant in the case, who passed away in July 2016.
