first_imgARCATA >> Following a pair of non-conference games where things were a little closer than some might have thought, the Jacks got to breathe a little easier down the stretch Monday night. It was in large part because of what they did the first 35 minutes or so.Getting contributions from up and down the roster, the Humboldt State men’s basketball team hit 19 3-pointers en route to a season-high point total and rolled to a convincing 111-78 win over Simpson University at Lumberjack Arena.“Offensi …last_img

2010: A Big Year For Remote Web Workers

first_imgThis year proved to be a strong one for online employment, as more and more took to the Web to find work, where an increasing number of jobs are for employers in other geographic areas, according to a report released by Elance.Elance reported its one-millionth job listing, as an annually-growing number of job seekers and freelancers use the site to find work. In total, the site saw 375,000 new listings in 2010, a 40% increase from last year. Web workers are cumulatively now earning over $100 million per year through the site. While these trends are specific to Elance, they tell us something about the job market as a whole, which is clearly becoming more mobile and distributed as technology continues to enable that shift. Elance highlights the explosion of mobile computing by reporting that the number of businesses posting mobile development jobs grew by 98% this year. In one of its more interesting breakdowns, the report outlines which skills grew in demand this year and which ones appear to be on their way out. Search engine marketing topped the list of “hot” skills for 2010, followed by iPhone development, Google App Engine, HTML5 and affiliate marketing. Decreasing in demand were skills related to direct marketing, BlackBerrys, Amazon Web Services, DHTML and Telemarketing. Pranksters Commandeer Mountain Dew Web Promotion

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#marketing#web#Web Culture fruzsina eordogh Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… By 1am Pacific on Monday, messing with Mountain Dew had become the hottest activity for anyone on Reddit and 4chan’s /b/ board at that hour. It wasn’t long before tricksters added to the Mountain Dew page a link to the rock video for Rick Astley’s 1987 pop hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” (an Internet in-joke known as a rickroll) as well as Web banners “saluting” Islamic extremists. PespiCo pulled the plug on the after-hours fun, but not before someone mirrored its site to memorialize the Web reprobate party.Online promotions staged by commercial entities are an increasingly popular target of online jokers. In July, Walmart’s social media campaign with rapper Pitbull was taken over by Something Awful writers David Thorpe and John Hendren. However, in that case, the prank worked out well for the retailer, in the form of hundreds of free press mentions. Thorpe told ReadWriteWeb the Walmart Pitbull hijacking became popular because it was a “collaborative prank.”Given how easy it is to appropriate crowd-sourced marketing campaigns, perhaps marketers would be smart to design their social media campaigns deliberately to be hijack-able.  A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… It’s a rough time to be a social marketer, and getting rougher: Mountain Dew announced a naming contest for its new Apple flavor over the weekend. As if on cue, Internet pranksters hijacked the contest. Not content with stuffing the virtual ballot box, they defaced the contest website with videos, offensive banners and in-jokes.PepsiCo, maker of Mountain Dew, shut down the “Dub the Dew” contest site early Monday morning. The soft drink company was by no means the first victim of the notoriously juvenile Web community known as 4chan.The hijinks began as a post on 4chan’s infamous /b/ discussion board that put out a call to take part in Operation: Gushing Granny. The operation’s stated mission was to name the new Apple-flavored drink “Gushing Granny.”A /b/ user shared 4chan’s digital mayhem on the social news site Reddit early Sunday evening under the title “/b/ Destroys Another Online Contest.” The post hit Reddit’s front page within hours. From there, the contest attracted a wider audience of miscreants, as reflected by the top contest names. “Hitler Did Nothing Wrong” and “Diabeetus” soon became the top voted names. One audience member offered to raffle a virtual hat in a popular multiplayer online game in return for votes for his Mountain Dew name submission, drawing new waves of voters both for and against it. Facebook’s Next Privacy Issue & How To Opt Out

first_imgRelated Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#privacy#web You will be prompted to enter your name, address and email address. Datalogix says people will be out of the program within 30 days. dave copeland In what is likely to become the next privacy controversy for Facebook, the social-media giant is working with a big-data firm to correlate off-line purchases with ad views on Facebook. And, surprise, opting out is trickier than Facebook’s typically difficult procedures. The data aggregator is Datalogix, which claims to have information about consumer transactions worth $1 trillion and about almost every U.S. household. Most of that data comes from retailer loyalty-card programs, and includes hashed email addresses and phone numbers, and purchases linked to those accounts, according to a report issued by the nonprofit privacy-advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation. The EFF report didn’t make clear how long Facebook has had access to the data, which will help Facebook understand how ads on the social network impact real-world purchases. Being able to do so would make the social network more popular with advertisers.Execs at Facebook told the foundation said that Facebook is after group patterns, and isn’t tracking any individuals’ purchases. Facebook also will disregard information not linked to one of its participants, according to the foundation. We’ve asked Facebook and Datalogix for comment and will update this post as soon as we hear back from them. The foundation report says that if you’re on Facebook, you are automatically in this data-sharing arrangement. There is no mention of this program on Facebook.com. How To Opt OutOpting out requires you to go to the Datalogix privacy page, which means that even most Facebook privacy-philes won’t know about the program. At the privacy page, scroll down to the “Choice” section and click on the link in the last sentence of the paragraph that gives you the option to “opt out of all Datalogix-enabled advertising & analytic products.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

How to Think About Your Critics

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now It’s easier to be a critic than it is to be a creator. The critic has only to find fault. They believe that the value that they create is in tearing others down. In truth, the critic is so afraid of having their own work criticized that they can’t bring themselves to produce anything of their own. So instead, they criticize. The critic hates what he sees in you. He hates that you have the audacity, the courage, the bravery to put yourself out there, to create, to ship. Because he can’t bring himself to create, he hates you for being able to do what he himself cannot. But the critic still wants what you have. He wants to be thought of as a creator. He wants the audience. He wants the accolades. He wants the attention. And he will do or say anything to anything to get attention, mistakenly believing that all attention is good attention. You don’t owe the critic a response or reply. You don’t owe critic a defense of your creation. You don’t owe him your energy. His real struggle is not with you. His struggle is really with himself. There isn’t a single argument that you can make in defense of your work that will help the critic win the battle he is fighting with himself. Defending your work only feeds the critic, it doesn’t help him.Pity the TrollTrolls leave a trail of negativity, criticism, and vitriol behind (especially here in the social web). They don’t understand that in their desperate attempt to be noticed, they’re gaining attention for something so negative that only their brother and sister trolls pay them any heed. Instead of winning friends and influencing people, they alienate the very audience whose attention it is they seek.Trolls don’t know that their is no real audience for trolls. They don’t recognize how others perceive them. The only response to trolls is to ignore them. Feeding trolls only gives them the false impression that what they’re doing by criticizing you is actually creating, that it adds value. It doesn’t.You create because you are a creator. If you create because you want to win over the trolls, you’re creating for the wrong reasons. You create for the people that appreciate your creation. You create for the people that find value in what you do. And unless you are a troll, trolls are not your audience.Push the publish button.QuestionsHave you ever let your fear of the critic stop you from creating or publishing your work? Was your critic who you really had in mind at the birth of your creation? How should you feel about the fact that your work doesn’t resonate with people for whom it was never intended? The most important “block” button is not the one you can click on the web. It’s the one in your mind. Who do you have to be to press the real “block” button?last_img read more
