Chris Myers on Retail Hell & Being Behind Bars in Whorl Inside a Loop

first_img View Comments Age: 27Hometown: New York CityCurrent Role: Playing convicted felon Jeffrey, who is more vulnerable and shy than his fellow inmates, as well as a lisping female minister, a five-year-old boy and a certain crisply coiffed presidential candidate in Dick Scanlan and Sherie Rene Scott’s prison-set drama Whorl Inside a Loop.Stage Cred: Myers won an Obie Award for his performance in last season’s An Octoroon. His other off-Broadway credits include Brownsville Song, Little Children Dream of God and more.“I grew up on the Upper West Side and still live there. I was an only child with a single mom. There was a lot of empty space in my life for my imagination to keep me occupied.”“I observed an acting class doing King Lear. The guy playing King Lear was absent, so the teacher turned to me and said, ‘You’re not just going to watch—you’re going to get up here.’ That was my introduction to acting; I was nine.”“My first job was at Pinkberry in SoHo. The customers were a lot of fashion people. It was not for me. Then I worked at Converse, where the shoppers were a lot of Europeans on vacation. I couldn’t take it.”“I was supporting myself as a DJ for a while after Juilliard. Working as an actor started to conflict with that—you can’t be in the club until four when you have an audition the next morning. I am now supporting myself solely as an actor; it’s been an adjustment.”“An Octoroon came out of nowhere for me, but it was such an important experience. It was jarring and mind-blowingly weird, but I knew I could put my heart into it. I was expecting protests outside the theater, not unanimous critical appraisal.”“I’ve been privileged to work on some pieces that have social implications and Whorl Inside a Loop fits that pattern. I’ve taught in prisons and marched for prison reform; the themes the play is dealing with are really important to me.” Related Shows Whorl Inside a Loop Show Closed This production ended its run on Sept. 27, 2015last_img read more

More transgender people seeking medical help – study

first_imgNewsHub 19 January 2018Family First Comment: Depends what type of ‘help’ they’re seeking. If it’s to ‘cut’ at the body and take drugs, it won’t help. If it’s counselling and support to deal with the gender identity disorder, it will. You don’t give people with anorexia nervosa weight-loss pills eh. More transgender Kiwis are seeking help from Wellington medical services, a study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal has found. The paper is one of the first to look at how many Kiwis identify as transgender, and found 438 people had visited a Wellington clinic specialising in gender reassignment therapy between 1990 and 2016.There had been a particular increase in recent years with 92 people making at least one visit in 2016, compared to 11 people in 2009.This included 51 people requesting therapy to transition from male-to-female and 41 requesting female-to-male therapy in 2016 and a rise in young people visiting the clinic. The study’s authors said the findings were important because, while overseas clinics had noted a marked increase in the number of people requesting gender reassignment therapy, little data had been compiled in New Zealand. It showed the need for different medical fields and social groups to provide “holistic” and connected support services for transgender people, particularly those who are young, the authors said.READ MORE: http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/health/2018/01/more-transgender-people-seeking-medical-help-study.htmllast_img read more

Wellington has 2 public tornado shelters; however you may want to find shelter at home

first_imgBy Tim Hay, Wellington Fire/EMS Chief — There are only two public tornado shelter locations in the city of Wellington. They are located at Sumner Regional Medical Center at 1323 North A (enter on the southeast side)….…and Sumner Care Center Nursing Home 1600 West 8th (enter on the west side). The old junior high located at 311 North A is no longer a public shelter as the building was sold to a private entity.  The City of Wellington encourages the public to find primary shelter in their home or business during a tornado warning as there may not be time to drive to a public shelter.  Locations to shelter in the home or business are a basement, interior hallway or bathroom without windows.Other locations to seek shelter are a neighbor, friend or family with a basement.  Make sure you have arrangements to gain access to their home or business in the event they are not occupied.  Those who live in a mobile home are encouraged to leave the mobile home regardless as mobile homes are easily damaged or destroyed by high winds or tornadoes. If you are in a vehicle and do not have time to seek shelter exit the vehicle and find shelter in a low lying area.  Tornado sirens are only efficient as outdoor warning devices.  They are not meant to be heard in structures or vehicles. The public must stay vigilant at all times when threatening weather approaches.  Tornado sirens are sounded when the national weather service includes the City of Wellington or the Wellington Lake (which can be sounded individually) or when an emergency responder visually confirms a tornado. When a tornado siren sounds or the national weather service issues a tornado warning for our area the public is encouraged to seek shelter immediately.  There are “no” sounding of the sirens for an all clear.  The public must decide when it is safe to leave shelter based on media reports and other information.  Visit the City of Wellington website, http://cityofwellington.net/, periodically for news and shelter information. I guess this is more of a question then a comment. Report Reply 3 replies · active 377 weeks ago +2 Vote up Vote down CueballSumnernewscow 94p · 377 weeks ago I’m glad you said something about this. At the Wellington schools there are tornado safety rooms in all school buildings EXCEPT Eisenhower Elementary on the west side of town. Report Reply 0 Vote up Vote down ???? · 377 weeks ago EXCEPT Eisenhower??? What’s up with that? Dig in Cueball, time to find some answers. What could possibly be the reasoning for not providing the same level of protection to all our kids. ??School Board?? Report Reply 0 Vote up Vote down birdfan · 377 weeks ago Thats better than most districts, would be good to upgrade the last school asap. Report Reply +1 Vote up Vote down Stormie · 377 weeks ago Lincoln Elementary has a ‘state of the art’ FEMA Safe room. Steel and concrete walls and ceiling, bathroom, emergency lighting. The only missing component is that it should be available to the community. I believe that would require 24/7 accessibility, so the police or fire department would need a key and personnel to open the outside door during storm warnings.
