Morrison golden in 1,000 metre race in Germany

first_imgThe World Cup speed skating season comes to a close this weekend in Germany and Denny Morrison is doing all he can to close out the year on as high of a note as possible. With his specialty the 1,500 metre race still to come tomorrow, Morrison got the weekend off to a great start today with a gold medal performance in the 1,000 metre.Morrison’s time of 1:09.07 was his second best time in the distance this year, though he wasn’t sure how well he had actually skated considering he nearly had a mishap in the first turn of the race.“I had a solid first 50 metres in my race today, which got me off to a good start,” said Morrison in a Speed Skating Canada release. “In the first turn, however, I had a weird step onto my left skate and I skidded a bit, and for a little while I wondered if I had lost a lot of speed. I continued skating and ended up surprised and happy with my opening split, as well as a fast first lap. So I forgot about it and finished as hard as I could.”- Advertisement -If not for a questionable disqualification in the second World Cup race of the year in Seoul, South Korea, today’s result would have put Morrison among the top three finishers in the overall season standings in the 1,000 metre distance.last_img
