Kansas governor: Medical pot should fund Medicaid expansion

first_imgOVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly is proposing that Kansas legalize marijuana for medical use to generate revenues that would finance an expansion of the state’s Medicaid health coverage for the needy. Kelly announced her proposal Monday. Kelly has made expanding Medicaid for as many as 165,000 additional Kansas residents a top priority since becoming governor two years ago, but top Republicans in the GOP-controlled Legislature have prevented its passage. Kelly also previously said she’d sign a medical marijuana bill but she hadn’t actively pushed the idea. She is wedding two ideas that are likely to face strong opposition among Republican legislative leaders and many rank-and-file GOP lawmakers.last_img

Russell Westbrook dedicates performance to Nipsey Hussle, whose death has shaken NBA

Conner blossoming for Steelers as Falcons falter

first_imgRunning back James Conner (30), of the Pittsburgh Steelers, scores by rising above linebacker Foye Oluokun (54) and the rest of the Atlanta Falcons defense in the NFL game on Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Pittsburgh. Don Wright AP Photo PITTSBURGH (AP) — James Conner isn’t much on talking. Not about the cancer battle that threatened to sidetrack his promising career before he even reached the NFL. Not about his ongoing audition as the new featured running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers while Le’Veon Bell continues his extended sabbatical. Not even about his new role as an obstetrician in shoulder pads, a side gig he picked up while helping teammate JuJu Smith-Schuster celebrate a touchdown during Pittsburgh’s one-sided 41-17 victory over Atlanta on Sunday. Smith-Schuster feigned contractions while lying on the Heinz Field turf before Conner took the ball and placed it in the wide receiver’s hands.“I delivered a baby,” Conner said with only a faint hint of a smile. “First time. I’m going to stick to football though.”Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (30) signals after making a first down on a run against the Atlanta Falcons in the first quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, in Pittsburgh. (AP Photo/Don Wright)Considering how Conner looked while piling up 185 total yards and two touchdowns as the Steelers (2-2-1) restored some sanity to their uneven season, that’s probably a good idea. Running often and with authority — two traits that defined his record-setting college career at Pittsburgh — Conner served as the offensive fulcrum Pittsburgh turned on while punishing the reeling Falcons (1-4).“James needed that,” Steelers fullback Roosevelt Nix said. “Our team needed that.”Particularly after the way Pittsburgh looked in the second half of a loss to Baltimore the previous week, when the Steelers basically abandoned the idea of giving the ball to Conner entirely, even though the game was tied at the break. There was no such wavering this time. Conner had 99 total yards in the first quarter alone, including a 30-yard catch-and-run, and kept right on going. He ran for 110 yards on 21 carries and added 75 yards receiving. It was a performance that was reminiscent of the kind Bell has churned out with regularity before deciding to spend the first portion of this season staying away while waiting to sign his one-year franchise tender.Though Conner understands the desire to stack his play up against Bell’s, he wants no part of it. He’s just doing what he’s asked to do. Against Atlanta it was give the offense some much-needed balance. The Steelers ran the ball 29 times and passed it 29 times while improving to 7-0-1 all-time at home versus the Falcons.“I think the (offensive line) were tired of hearing all the, ’What’s going on? We can’t run it,’” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. “I think James was tired of hearing about Le’Veon so much, so he put on a heck of a performance today.”The kind Conner and his teammates hope is repeatable.“It’s like back on track,” Conner said. “It’s playing Steelers football today.”Some other takeaways as Pittsburgh sent Atlanta to its third straight loss.BASHED BIRDSThe Falcons are off to their worst start since 2013. While injuries on defense have played a significant factor, one of the main issues in Pittsburgh was an offensive line that couldn’t protect Matt Ryan. The Steelers chased Ryan down six times, including a strip-sack by T.J. Watt with less than 4 minutes to go that ended with teammate LJ Fort falling on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.“Everybody knows our protection needs to be better than it’s been,” said Ryan, who completed 26 of 38 passes for 285 yards and a score. “The hardest part for players is having to watch that film and critically evaluate yourself. I think with the kind of guys that we have there’s not going to be a whole lot that needs to be said.”WI-FI CONNECTEDRoethlisberger and Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown rediscovered the chemistry that’s made them one of the most potent combinations in the NFL for the last five-plus years. Brown caught six passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns and downplayed the notion there’s been any sort of communication problem with his longtime teammate.“All of my catches, all of my touchdowns are from him, and that’s my guy,” Brown said. “I live and die with him and the Wi-Fi was lit.”SPECIAL … AND NOT SO MUCHPittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell missed his third extra point of the season, matching his career total coming into 2018, but the Steelers also produced a bright spot on special teams when Nix broke in and blocked a punt by Atlanta’s Matt Bosher that set up Conner’s second touchdown run.“We feel like we’re going to get one (blocked kick) every week,” Nix said. “We rush hard, that’s what we do. It just happened like that.”UP NEXTFalcons: Welcome NFC South rival Tampa Bay next Sunday. The teams have split their last six meetings.Steelers: Visit AFC North-leading Cincinnati (4-1) next Sunday. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar wants a general election in May 2020

first_imgMay 2020 “is the right moment” for a general election, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has told Fine Gael TDs in a speech today. Speaking at the party’s annual away day in Cork, Varadkar said he had always believed that the next election should take place in the summer of 2020.“I think May 2020 is the right moment. It will allow to us to complete a full parliamentary session in the new year, discharge our Government duties around St Patrick’s Day and the March European Council and have a new Government in place well in advance of the next summer recess. “We should also, by then, have secured a Brexit Deal or have guided the country through the worst of No Deal. Though timelines, when it comes to Brexit, are unpredictable,” he said. The Taoiseach said it would also allow the government to spend the next few months concentrating on other items such as the Budget, Brexit, regional development, housing, health and climate action.“I believe we can win that election. In fact, I am sure of it even though it may not become apparent until the last week or ten days of the Election Campaign,” he told his party colleagues.Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said Mr Varadkar wrote to Fianna Fáil Leader Mícheál Martin to say that a general election would take place next summer, in May or June. Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One Mr Coveney said the Taoiseach wrote to Mr Martin many months ago about the date of the next electionHe said the Taoiseach asked Mr Martin for the space to allow the Government to do what it needs to for the country in relation to Brexit planning.Mr Coveney said if there was a no-deal Brexit the Government wants to be in a position to try to steer and protect Ireland.Taoiseach Leo Varadkar wants a general election in May 2020 was last modified: September 12th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

QPR fans on Twitter react to Holloway’s comments about Eze

first_imgEbere Eze has impressed for QPR in recent games © Joe Giddens/PA WireSome QPR fans on Twitter have been critical of comments made by manager Ian Holloway about Ebere Eze.The young forward impressed again for Rangers on Monday, scoring their third goal in a 4-1 win against Norwich.Holloway praised Eze but has continued to insist that the teenager must improve the defensive side of his game.Holloway has also suggested that although Eze currently operates mainly in the number 10 role, in the longer term he could play out wide. Some Rangers fans felt Holloway got it spot on, but others were unhappy with his comments. Why does Olli have to come out with comments like this? SuperSport stun Manchester City

first_img15 July 2013It wasn’t a good weekend to be a Manchester football supporter. England champions United lost 1-0 to a Singha All Stars XI in Thailand, while runners-up City went down 2-0 to South African Premier Soccer League club SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday. It was an inauspicious first game in charge of Manchester City for Manuel Pellegrini after his move from Spain’s Malaga.Although missing some star players, the Sky Blues trotted out plenty of big guns for the Nelson Mandela Football Invitational match, but Pellegrini chose to play two different sides in each half and it backfired as SuperSport United upset their more fancied opponents.ChancesThe visitors created some decent opportunities in the first half, but were left to rue not taking any of them when Mame Niang netted for Matsatsantsa in the 56th minute. Kermit Erasmus then ensured a win for SuperSport with a second goal in the 81st minute.Afterwards, Pellegrini told the Manchester City Football Club website: “First of all it’s my first match in charge, but for Manchester City and for me it’s an honour to participate here in South Africa.“The players were clear with what they had to do in this game. I spoke with them before the match and we had four or five days working together.‘I’m not worried’“We’re not prepared to play the way we want them to play, so this was a normal match for pre-season. I’m not worried and this is what we expected.”Pellegrini used the game to give new signing Fernandinho a run-out, but his star- studded side failed to impress.Edin Dzeko had City’s best chance of an entertaining first half, but Ronwen Williams raced out of his goal to pull off a brave double-save at the Bosnian star’s feet. The contest flowed back and forth as SuperSport showed no fear of their big-name opponents and took the game to them, opening up a number of chances down the right flank.Second halfIn the second half, City’s new line-up lacked some of the cohesion the first half team had exhibited and they paid for it when United, who like City had made a number of changes, took the lead through Mame Niang, who rose high to meet an Innocent Mdledle cross and head home and put SuperSport into the lead.Substitute Kermit Erasmus then sealed the victory nine minutes from time after a strong run and shot past Romanian goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.United’s new coach, Cavin Johnson, who has taken over from Gavin Hunt, who was in charge for six years, tried to downplay the result, saying his players should not read too much into it.He did suggest, though, that similar commitment would put them in the hunt for PSL honours.AmazuluManchester City next face AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Thursday, 18 July, Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. Kick-off is at 20:00.AmaZulu fans have been urged to buy tickets and also to sign a Madiba birthday card. The giant card, which tour promoters Matchworld want to get into the Guiness Book of Records, is on display in Durban. The aim is to have 10 000 signatures on it. The current world record for the most number of signatures on a birthday card is 5 339 for actor Robert Downey junior.last_img read more
