High-resolution animated tectonic reconstruction of the South Pacific and West Antarctic margin

first_imgAn animated reconstruction shows South Pacific plate kinematics between 90 and 45 Ma, using the satellite-derived gravity anomaly field, interpolated isochrons and plate rotation parameters from both published and new work on marine geophysical data. The Great South Basin and Bounty Trough, New Zealand, are shown as the earliest Pacific-Antarctic plate boundary that opened before 83 Ma. The earliest true Pacific-Antarctic seafloor formed within the eastern parts of this boundary, but later and farther west, seafloor formed within its Antarctic flank. After 80 Ma, the Bellingshausen plate converged with an oceanic part of the Antarctic plate to its east, while its motion simultaneously caused rifting in continental Antarctica to the south. The Pacific-Bellingshausen spreading center developed a set of long offset transform faults that the Pacific-Antarctic plate boundary inherited around chron C27 when the Bellingshausen plate ceased to move independently as part of a Pacific-wide plate tectonic reorganization event. Southwest of these transforms the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge saw an increase in transform-fault segmentation by similar to58 Ma. One of the long offset Pacific-Bellingshausen transforms, referred to as “V,” was modified during the C27 reorganization event when a Pacific-Antarctic-Phoenix triple junction initiated on its southern edge. Eastern parts of “V” started to operate in the Pacific-Phoenix spreading system, lengthening it even more, while its western parts operated in the Pacific-Antarctic system. This complicated feature was by-passed and deactivated by ridge axis propagation to its northwest at similar to47 Ma. We interpret our animation to highlight possible connections between these events.last_img read more

Archer shines as Pirates top Royals 2-1 for 3-game sweep

first_imgPittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer delivers in the first inning of a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals in Pittsburgh, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chris Archer came to Pittsburgh with much fanfare when he was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31. Then he went 1-3 in his first eight starts with the Pirates. It’s almost certainly too late for the Pirates to make a playoff push this season, but on Wednesday night, Archer finally looked like the pitcher they thought they were getting at the non-waiver trade deadline. He pitched seven strong innings, and Pittsburgh completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 2-1 win.In his most impressive start since the trade, Archer (5-8) allowed one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander made it out of the sixth inning for the first time in nine starts for the Pirates.“The one thing I hang my hat on is making starts and pitching deep into ballgames,” Archer said. “Giving up way more runs than I wanted to this year, but the thing that frustrates me the most is my average innings. It has to be the lowest of my career, but there’s a correlation. The better you pitch, the deeper you pitch into games.”The Pirates remain marooned in fourth place in the NL Central despite a five-game winning streak that’s moved them three games over .500.“You play the game to win the game,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “The games matter. They matter Game 1 to Game 150 to Game 151. There’s nobody that suits up and wants to go out and not play well.”Felipe Vazquez allowed one walk in the ninth but earned his 35th save one day after he let a 1-0 lead slip away — his fifth blown save of the season. The Pirates went on to win 2-1 in 11 innings on Tuesday night.Adam Frazier broke a 1-1 tie with a homer to right-center with two outs in the fifth inning off rookie right-hander Heath Fillmyer (3-2). It was Frazier’s ninth homer of the season, and it came two days after he fouled a ball off his knee. The injury held Frazier out of the starting lineup Tuesday, although he entered in the ninth and played the final three innings. He started Wednesday at second base.Fillmyer allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings for Kansas City, which has lost four straight after winning five of six.“What do they say in baseball? You can win a game with 100 pitches and lose a game with one. That’s kind of what happened today,” Fillmyer said. “Not that I was perfect by any means, but you know what? I left one a little up. The guy got it, and it ended up being the difference.”Royals manager Ned Yost was pleased with how the 24-year-old battled.“These are big-league starts,” Yost said. “That’s exactly what you ask for. Go out, keep us in the game, give us a chance to win. That’s exactly what it is.”Colin Moran put the Pirates on the board with a single to left that scored Corey Dickerson, who was 2 for 3 with two doubles, in the second inning. Adalberto Mondesi tied it with a homer to center, his 10th, in the third.LINEUP CHANGERoyals: OF Jorge Bonifacio was taken out of the starting lineup after going 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and one walk Tuesday. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and drew a walk.TRAINER’S ROOMPirates: RHP Chad Kuhl underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday. No further details regarding the operation were provided. Kuhl was re-examined by Dr. David Altchek in New York on Tuesday. He last pitched on June 26.UP NEXTRoyals: RHP Jorge Lopez (2-4, 3.93 ERA) is expected to start against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. He left Kansas City’s game against the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 14 with a left rib contusion sustained in a collision with 3B Hunter Dozier.Pirates: RHP Ivan Nova (9-9, 4.07) takes the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. In his past two starts, Nova has allowed one run on seven hits over 12 innings with 13 strikeouts and two walks.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sportslast_img read more

Colin Kaepernick: Did he understand the history of the position he played? (Oct. 16)

first_imgby J. Pharoah Doss, For New Pittsburgh CourierEx-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick became a controversial figure in 2016 after he knelt on the sideline during the national anthem to protest police brutality. After the season Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers, no other team signed him. He filed a grievance against the NFL for collusion, and eventually the matter was settled out of court.Kaepernick hasn’t played football since.Recently, the media received a document written by Kaepernick’s agent. It said, “It’s difficult to think of another young player in NFL history with statistics and character as impressive as Colin’s not being given an opportunity to earn a spot on an NFL roster.” This statement made me wonder if Kaepernick fully understood the history of Black quarterbacks in the NFL.The first Black quarterback in the modern era of the Super Bowl was Marlin Briscoe. In 1968 Briscoe was drafted by the Denver Broncos. Briscoe played quarterback from youth football to college but the Denver Broncos converted him to a defensive back. When Denver’s starting quarterback got injured Denver started him for the last five games of the season. In that short stint Briscoe threw 14 touchdown passes and was a candidate for Rookie of the Year. Denver released him after the season. Briscoe bounced around the league as a wide receiver and never played quarterback again. While Briscoe started quarterback in Denver a reporter wrote, “Of the dozens of quarterbacks on the rosters of the 26 major league professional teams in the United States, Marlin is the only one whose skin is Black… But Marlin is not mainly interested in proving he can run the ball. What he’s trying to show them is that a Black man can run the ball club.”J. PHAROAH DOSS Like us at https://www.facebook.com/pages/New-Pittsburgh-Courier/143866755628836?ref=hlFollow @NewPghCourier on Twitter  https://twitter.com/NewPghCourier The stereotype was Black players lacked the character for leadership and didn’t have the intelligence to play quarterback at the professional level.Kaepernick was born in 1987.The 1987 Washington Redskins became the Super Bowl champions. That team was quarterbacked by Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. But that didn’t put the stereotype to rest. Williams was a backup who replaced the starting quarterback after an injury and Williams didn’t start the following year. The question remained if teams could build an offense around a Black quarterback and be serious postseason contenders for the duration of that quarterback’s career. At the time there were only two other Black quarterbacks—Houston’s Warren Moon and Philadelphia’s Randall Cunningham. Both were struggling to have success, but Moon and Cunningham were fully aware of what failure meant, so it wasn’t an option. (Warren Moon became a Hall of Famer and Cunningham is a legend.)Over the next decade Black quarterbacks started to appear on NFL rosters. But the critics said these Black quarterbacks were runners, not passers, as well as poor game managers. One of the best to emerge was Philadelphia’s Donavan McNabb. In 2003, Rush Limbaugh resigned as a co-host of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown after his controversial remarks indicating McNabb wasn’t a good quarterback and the media overrating him because he was Black. Limbaugh suggested there is a social desire for Black quarterbacks and Black coaches to do well and their mediocrity is overlooked. In 2007 McNabb appeared on HBO’s Real Sports and stated that there’s an element that doesn’t want Blacks to succeed at the quarterback position so Black quarterbacks have to do more than Whites. On a show called the Young Turks the host told his co-host that McNabb was wrong because times have changed. But a 2015 study revealed Black quarterbacks were twice as likely to be benched, or removed from play, than White quarterbacks, and broadcasters often attributed the success of Black quarterbacks to superior athletic skills while attributing the success of their White counterparts to superior intellect. The next year Kaepernick protested police brutality on the sideline. If Kaepernick understood the history of the Black quarterback he would have realized the myth of Black mediocrity still existed and he was in a position to make a contribution to its destruction. The struggle continued on the field, not on the sideline. But he took a knee and when quarterbacks do that, the game is over.last_img read more

Powered by Firework Usually, as a bowler, when you see Virat Kohli taking stance on the other end of the pitch, you’re going to feel uneasy. Its not an easy job to deliver against world no. 1 Test and ODI batsman. But, there is one bowler who knows the secret to pick up the Team India skipper’s wicket. Say hello to Adam Zampa, the superstar Australian bowler who has knocked Virat Kohli out six times in white ball formats, and reveals the trick behind it!Advertisement Image Courtesy: AP/ReutersIndia were thrashed by the visitors with a whopping 10 wicket victory at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. Captain Kohli’s experiment with the batting lineup worked against the team by moving down to 4th. The 31 year old was caught and bowled by Adam Zampa after just scoring 16 runs.As the two teams are taking each other on tomorrow in the second match of the series at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Zampa spoke on his method of taking on the opposition leader.Advertisement “It’s going to be an attacking approach. I think if you’re on the back-foot and have a defensive mindset then that’s when he (Kohli) can get on top of you. The most important thing playing in places like India against these guys is to have a little bit of character,” Zampa told reporters. The 27 year old leg break spinner, who has bowled out Kohli four times in ODI and two times in T20, added that Kohli finds cracking leggies at the early stage of the innings difficult.Advertisement He continued: “We basically just find that Virat finds leg-spinners hard to line up early in his innings, to be honest. He’s such a great starter, even the other day he was 16 off 14 or whatever it was, how much energy he brought to the crease, his running between the wickets, some of the cover drives he played off the quicks.”However, the BBL Melbourne Stars player admitted that his half a dozen times victim is still the toughest opponent to crack.“He is a very hard guy to bowl to. He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever had to bowl to. After game one, he will be even more switched on. It will be a big challenge.” Zampa added. Also read-Virat Kohli explains similarity between batting and a ‘chole bhature cheat meal’Jasprit Bumrah reveals the secret to send Steve Smith to the pavilion!
