The LP marks their third studio album following their 2009 debut album xx and 2012’s Coexist. The new record was recorded between March 2014 and August 2016 between New York, Los Angeles, London, and Reykjavik.This announcement comes in light of the recent shift in American pride. “We know these are uncertain times and we hope the joy & love we found making the record will get out into the world, in however small a way,” the band explained with the album’s announcement. To further accompany the excitement of their most recent work, The xx have shared the album’s leading single “On Hold.” As Pitchfork notes, the track samples the 1981 hit by Hall and Oates, “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).” Take a listen to the new track below:
The Saint Mary’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI) has opened its application process for the fourth session of SPARK, an eleven-week entrepreneurship training program for women in the greater South Bend community. SPARK 2013 will take place from March 5 to May 16, and participants can choose between morning and evening classes, which run for three hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “Since we started in 2011, the SPARK program has really grown,” WEI project director Martha Smith said. “We started with just one session a year and then moved up to two. Inaugurating the evening classes will allow more women to apply for the program. This way we can help spark more businesses.” The program is dedicated to assisting low- to middle-income women in the community gain more business knowledge on how to become entrepreneurs, Smith said. Each woman applies for the program with a business idea and if accepted, she expands her business plan so it can become a reality. Juli Turrell, who works as a realtor with Kaser Realty in South Bend, is one of this year’s applicants. Turrell said she wants to open an alternative therapeutic center in the community. “A friend told me about the program and it seemed like a perfect fit,” Turrell said. “I would like to be an entrepreneur, but there is just so much that I do not know. I hope to be accepted into this program so I can get my business up and running within the next six to nine months.” The SPARK program is modeled after a San Francisco non-profit called the Women’s Initiative, Smith said. Both programs include intense training sessions on topics like marketing, break-even points, mission statements, business plans, stress management, networking, record-keeping and loan information. “SPARK has three phases,” Smith said. “First we begin with the screening sessions, and then we move to program acceleration or the 11-week training sessions. “However, we do not stop there. The third phase is ‘rekindling the flame’. Participants must attend monthly meetings and we provide mentorship for up to a year after the training sessions are finished.” Smith said the greater South Bend community has played a significant role in funding the SPARK program. The main sponsors for the program are First Source, PNC Bank, NIBSCO and Key Bank, as well as small donors from the community. “The beauty of this program is that it’s Saint Mary’s College facilitating a program sponsored by a group of members in the community,” Smith said. “It is from the community and for the community.” Since its first session in 2011, Saint Mary’s has collaborated with the Notre Dame Clinic Law Center to help participants have a better grasp on the legal aspects of owning their own business. Clinical professor of law James Kelly oversees his third-year law students at the center, helping to draft and review contracts, advise and represent clients on leasing, employment and other regulatory compliance obligations. “While we represent both nonprofits and for-profits, the small business clients referred to us from SPARK are a highly valued part of our client base,” Kelly said. “The women receiving business training and mentoring from SPARK are starting interesting and exciting new ventures that benefit greatly from the legal advice and representation that our certified law interns provide. “The center is very proud to support SPARK’s mission of making our local economy more inclusive and fostering the creative energy of the women of our community.” Smith said she is thankful for the clinic’s work and believes this collaboration will only improve the program’s 55 percent success rate. “Our SPARKlers have been very successful,” Smith said. “They have started bilingual daycares, catering services, fitness centers and those are just to name a few. Not only do they leave with the spark to start their own businesses, but each woman blossoms and leaves with increased self-confidence.”
Washing foods with electrolyzed water can sometimes be up to10 times more effective at killing harmful bacteria than traditionalrinsing techniques, according to one University of Georgia scientist.”Currently, the food industry washes foods with a chlorinesolution to kill bacteria,” said Yen Con Hung, a food scientistat UGA’s Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancement in Griffin,Ga. “This method is effective, but it takes time to mix thechlorine solution and to ensure the correct concentration of residualchlorine in the solution.”Hunghas been testing a new method, which uses a combination of water,electricity and a salt solution to enhance the properties of water.The water and salt solution flow through a machine called an electrolyzedoxidizing water unit. The positive ions run through one side,and the negative ions through the other. The result is two formsof water; one very acidic and one with very high pH levels.Kills Bacteria BetterTesting the two waters in his laboratory, Hung found the acidicwater very effective at killing harmful bacteria. “We havetested this water on shell eggs, apples, lettuce and cutting boards,”Hung said. “It has a very strong bacterial killing effect,and for some applications has better effect than the currentlyused water/chlorine solutions.”Working with UGA sensory specialists, Hung put the acidic waterthrough consumer tests. “We had trained panelists compareproducts which were not treated to products treated with the water,”he said. “They found no differences in color, appearanceor smell.”Powerful SanitizerHung also tested the high pH water and found it to be extremelyuseful as a sanitizer. “It works like a soap, and it easesthe attachment of proteins and lipids in food materials to thefood preparation and processing surfaces,” Hung said.Hung’s research findings were published just a few months agoand he is already getting response from the food industry. “Thedevice is manufactured in Japan and Russia, and it isn’t beingused in the United States, yet,” he said. “We have alreadyheard from companies that are interested in using the processhere in the U.S.”Perfect for Food Service OperationsHung envisions the process being used by food service operationsfirst. “The small unit could easily be used in food servicefacilities,” Hung said. “It’s easier for workers touse so there would be no excuses for not using it. There’s nothingto prepare and mix, and you wouldn’t have to leave customers waiting.”He says the unit could also be useful in food processing plants.”In mass production, this technology would be very cost effective,”Hung said. “When you want to use it, you push a button. Youdon’t have to worry with mixing up concentrated liquids, and it’smore effective than chlorine rinses.”May Be Useful to ProcessorsIn the future, Hung plans to test the application of electrolyzedoxidized water during chicken processing. “We want to usethe water on chicken carcasses to see if it cuts down on the levelsof salmonella and campylobacter,” Hung said. “If itdoes, this treatment could be incorporated into chicken processingplants.”Hungalso plans to test the water on food products that are hard totreat to remove bacteria. “You can’t use heat to kill bacteriaon products like fresh berries and seafood like raw oysters,”Hung said. “The food needs to be safe, but no one wants theiroysters to be cooked. They wouldn’t be raw oysters any longer.”He also plans to further study what makes the water so effectiveand which properties in the water work best at killing bacteria.Home Use Down the Road”In Japan, there are home units similar to this that areused for treating water,” Hung said. “It purifies drinkingwater and lowers the pH levels.”Hung says he hopes to someday see U.S. consumers using homeversions of the electrolyzed water units. “It would be handyand could easily clean your food and sanitize your kitchen,”he said. “Until then, consumers should continue to wash theirfood products at home before preparing them for their families.”(Photographs by Sharon Omahen.) The Women’s FA Cup starts on the weekend of March 6-9 with the prelims and comes to an end with the final between July 3-6, 2020.For all the leagues, there will be a break after the weekend of March 27-30, 2020 and they will resume on the weekend of April 10-13, 2020.The new Ghana Football season will be launched on Friday, December 20 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Ghana Football Association has released the dates and corresponding match days for the upcoming Ghana football season.The dates cover the starts of the Ghana Premier League, the Division One League and the Women’s League. In addition, dates for the start of the various cup competitions: MTN FA Cup and the Women’s FA Cup have also been announced.The Ghana Premier League will start on the weekend of December 27-30 while the Division One starts on the weekend of January 10-13, 2020 with the Women’s League commencing on the weekend of January 17-20, 2020.For the MTN FA Cup, the preliminaries are between January 24 and 27, 2020 while the Round of 64 takes place on February 21- 24. The competition ends on July 26, 2020.
