Celebrate Bob Dylan’s 75th Birthday With His Best Moments & Tributes

first_imgHappy 75th Birthday Bob Dylan! Possibly the greatest poet to come out of the 60s, Dylan is our most revered contemporary songwriter. His incredible catalog represents some of the most important work in the history of Folk, Americana, and Rock music. Classics tunes such as “All Along The Watchtower”, “Like A Rolling Stone”, “Maggie’s Farm”, “Tangled up in Blue”, and “I Shall Be Released” are just a small piece of the puzzle, as Dylan released several legendary and influential albums like Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, and Highway 61 Revisited.Famous for “going electric” at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, Dylan is credited with bringing contemporary Folk music into the Rock era, weaving his politically-charged lyrics with the exciting live musicianship that we’ve come to expect from concerts today. By doing so, Dylan essentially merged the worlds of Folk and Rock that encouraged the musical counter-culture movement of the late 60’s.Dylan’s acceptance of “plugged in” instruments (and subsequent hiring of The Band as his “electric” band) inspired a generation of musicians to explore the medium, and he heavily influenced artists like The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and Jimi Hendrix (among countless others) to plug in and explore their instruments and songs in new, groundbreaking ways. On top of all that (as the story goes), he even maybe-sort-of introduced The Beatles to the joys of marijuana! Without Bob Dylan, we might have never heard Jerry Garcia play one of his beautiful guitar solos on an electric guitar, The Beatles might have never been introduced to their psychedelic side, and The Band may have never made their way into the public eye. It’s truly amazing to consider how massive Bob Dylan’s influence has been to the world of music and the culture that surrounds it!To celebrate this legendary artist’s 75th birthday, check out some great footage of the man himself performing some of his best songs over the years, along with a few of his most fun collaborations, and some very impressive covers performed by an eclectic range of artists. Enjoy the videos below, and happy birthday Bob!“Mr. Tambourine Man” at Newport Folk Festival in 1964.“Maggie’s Farm” opening the first-ever electric set at Newport Folk Festival, performed by Bob Dylan in 1965 (note the heavy booing by angry folk music fans at the end!).Bob Dylan and The Band perform “Forever Young” during The Last Waltz.26 minutes of Bob Dylan with The Grateful Dead from Giants Stadium 7/12/1987 during their “Alone and Together” mini-tour.In the late 80’s, Bob Dylan was part of a super-group called the Travelling Wilburys with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. While the band never toured together, here’s a music video of their hit song “Handle With Care.”Famed producer T. Bone Burnett organized these incredible contemporary songwriters to complete unfinished songs from Dylan’s Basement Tapes era with The Band. This modern supergroup, dubbed The New Basement Tapes, includes Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. This video below captures Mumford singing the beautiful “Kansas City”, with special guest Johnny Depp filling in for Costello on guitar. Here’s some audio of the great Johnny Cash performing Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” at Newport Folk Festival in 1964Dave Matthews Band has been covering Dylan’s incredible “All Along The Watchtower” for years. Sampension invests in German, Irish green bonds and plans more

first_imgDanish labour-market pension fund Sampension has announced an investment of DKK300m (€40m) in green bonds issued by Ireland and Germany, and it expects to put more into the “still limited” market for these environmentally-friendly securities.Sampension and the group of pension funds it manages – the Architects’ Pension Fund (AP) and the Pension Fund for Agricultural Academics & Veterinarians (PJD) as well as engineers’ fund ISP – have made the investment.Roughly half of the total was invested in German green bonds issued by development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), with the other half going into Irish Sovereign Green Bonds (ISGBs).The DKK262bn pension fund said it expects to make more investments in green bonds over the next few years, adding that the German government recently announced plans to set aside DKK375bn for an investment fund with the aim of boosting sustainable schemes. Jesper Nørgaard, Sampension’s deputy CIO, said: “The market for both green, social and sustainable bonds is still limited.”However, looking just a few years ahead, he predicted there would be far greater breadth in this type of investment.Sampension said the Dutch government issued DKK45bn of green bonds this summer, and the Danish government had discussed the possibility of releasing its own green bonds – a plan the fund said was expected to become a reality next year.“Responsible investments and long-term, stable returns go together. This means that when a green or sustainable investment yields the same or higher as other bonds with the same risk, then of course we invest in it,” Nørgaard said.Separately, large Nordic pension funds including ATP, Danica Pension, PFA Pension, MP Pension, PenSam and AP2 put money into the first green bond to be issued in Danish kroner by the World Bank, which was announced two weeks ago.The bank said the DKK3bn AAA-rated issue, which carries a 0.2% annual coupon, marked its re-entry into the Danish krone market for the first time since 1997, and added that the 20-year issue was the longest maturity green bond issued by a supranational agency in the market.George Richardson, World Bank capital markets director, said: “We are pleased to be back in the Danish market with our first DKK-denominated green bond.“Investors are looking to connect their investments to development solutions that address climate change and other global challenges that make a difference for people around the world. We appreciate the strong support from Danish investors,” he added.Commenting on its investment, ATP said: “As a pension fund with liabilities in Danish kroner and being a dedicated green bond investor, ATP highly appreciates the issuance of IBRD’s inaugural DKK green bond.”According to the Danish central bank, Danmarks Nationalbanken, citing Moody’s data, green bonds only accounted for around 1% of the total global bond market at the end of September, with an outstanding value of just under €700bn, despite the green bond market having quadrupled over the last four years. In Denmark, issuance of – and investment in – green bonds has also increased, but on a lower scale the bank reported.Outstanding green bonds stood at just over DKK40bn, with the insurance and pensions sector holding the majority of Danish investors’ green bond holdings of around DKK37bn, the bank said.last_img read more

Road to Recovery Begins with Serious Determination

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, September 12, 2017 – Southern Bahamas – The road to recovery for residents of those Bahamian islands negatively impacted by Hurricane Irma began with “serious determination,” Monday (September 11, 2017).Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis and a team of senior Administration officials took the first, critical steps on the road to recovery from Hurricane Irma Monday, visiting the three islands in the Southern Bahamas that were most impacted by the very dangerous Category 4 storm, September 8, 2017.They were there to get on-the-ground briefings from Damage Assessment Teams that traveled as part of the Prime Minister’s delegation, and to speak with residents – some of whom decided to “ride out” the dangerous storm.Dr. Minnis was also briefed by Initial Damage Assessment Teams – particularly officers of the Royal Bahamas Police and Defence Forces and Local Government officials — who would have gone into the affected areas in the immediate aftermath of the storm. The work of the Initial Damage Assessment Teams and the Damage Assessment Teams is critical in Disaster Management, as their assessments will be used to help provide Government planners with a road map towards determining the appropriate course of action to be taken on the path to recovery.Prime Minister Minnis was scheduled to visit the islands on Sunday (September 10, 2017) after the ‘All Clear’ was given for the Southern Bahamas, but severe headwinds in New Providence forced aviators to push back Dr. Minnis’ visit to Monday. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister of Works, the Hon. Desmond Bannister; Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Renward Wells; Minister of Education, the Hon. Jeffrey Lloyd; Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Duane Sands; Minister of Transport and Local Government, the Hon. Frankie Campbell; Minister of Tourism and Aviation, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar; Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren Henfield; Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Lanisha Rolle, and Minister of Labour, Senator, the Hon. Dion Foulkes. The delegation also comprised Opposition Leader, the Hon. Philip Davis, and administrative, technical and logistics experts from the Office of the Prime Minister; the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA); Ministry of Works (including those from the Water and Sewerage Corporation and Bahamas Power and Light); and the Ministry of Transport and Local Government; Tourism and Aviation and Agriculture and Fisheries, among others. The delegation’s first stop was Salina Point, which bore the brunt of Irma’s wrath in Acklins.  Homes and small businesses were either destroyed or received some form of damage, while storm surge created by Hurricane Irma brought seawater from the surrounding beach onshore for an estimated several hundred feet in some areas.   The Homecoming site also received damage, as did the cemetery.   While there were downed power lines, there was no major damage to poles.Mr. Mario Virgil, Chief Councilor for Acklins, said the majority of the 234 residents of Salina Point, either evacuated the area or sought shelter elsewhere on the island. Five persons were said to have remained behind to “ride out the storm.” All five have been accounted for and are safe and sound.Chief Councilor Virgil said the island’s much valued cascarilla bark farming industry was not impacted by the storm, as the majority of the trees are grown in Central Acklins. Cascarilla bark farming and the fishing industry are the two major revenue generators for Acklins. The island’s crop farming industry– watermelons, peas, honeydews, potatoes, sour limes – also fared well according to Chief Councilor Virgil. High winds did impact the corn crop, however.   The delegation’s next stop was Crooked Island, which sustained little damage to infrastructure.  Administrator Leonard Dames said cell and land phone service, electricity and water were “fully functional.”Early reports indicate that the Clinic and Dock at Landrail Point also sustained some damage. The school in Colonel Hill was “slightly damaged.” A number of seawalls that were under construction were also impacted by the storm. The final leg of the journey took the delegation to Ragged Island. It was clear to see from the air upon approach, that the island-community, had been ravaged by Hurricane Irma.   Downed power lines and poles snapped in half by hurricane-force winds still littered the community Monday as the Prime Minister and his delegation toured the island to assess and evaluate the damage brought on by Hurricane Irma.Government buildings (school, police station, clinic, post office), homes and businesses were either flattened by the storm or severely damaged. Many of those that were left standing were only a shell, having had doors and concrete walls torn out; roofs torn off, and windows blown out.Communications are also out due to the extensive damage caused to the island’s infrastructure.Navigating the community on foot and in the few vehicles that survived Irma’s wrath, proved a bit tricky as assessment teams and members of the delegation had to manoeuvre around large electricity poles and wires that blocked pathways.   The stench from the rotting carcasses of dead animals was also evident.Prime Minister Minnis told residents that he was ordering a second round of evacuation for the 17 persons who “rode out the storm,” in their best interest.    evacuations are set to begin Wednesday, September 13, 2017, for those willing to evacuate.Story by: Matt Maura (BIS)PHOTO CAPTIONSouthern Island devastation in the wake of Hurricane Irma early September 2017.(Photos/Yontalay Bowe, OPM Media Services) — Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppcenter_img Related Items:last_img read more

Lets call Earth Planet Ocean

first_imgThe future of humankind will depend to a great extent on the resources to be taken from the ocean volume and the seafloor says the book ‘Oceans and the Future of the Human Race’, by Sudipta Kumar De.Even with the technology available today humankind has better maps of the surface of Mars and dark side of the Moon than of the bottom of the oceans. While a dozen people have walked on the Moon 384,400 kms above the earth’s surface, only three have descended and come back from the deepest part in the sea, just 11 kms below, the book informs.  Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Today, we can go to Mars, but the deep ocean really is our final frontier. The unexplored oceans hold mysteries more compelling, environments more challenging and life-forms more bizarre than anything the vacuum of space has to offer, the book says. Ocean is also the cornerstone of the earth’s life support system. If it is in trouble, so are we, the author says. Possible solutions to the world’s energy, food, environmental and other problems are far more likely to be found in the nearby oceans than in distant space. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with Netflix The space is a distant, hostile and barren place, the study of which yields few major discoveries and an abundance of over hyped claims. By contrast the oceans are nearby and their study is a potential source of discoveries that could prove helpful for addressing a wide range of national concerns from climate change to disease; for reducing energy, mineral and potable water shortage and it is also cheaper, the author says. NASA is spending billions in search of extraterrestrial lives while there are at least 750, 000 new species still waiting to be discovered beneath the waves, the author says. When millions of poor people die from hunger, lack of medicine and water, it is an ocean scientist who can help them, not a space scientist, the book says. For the scientists who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge about the sea, it is a sad state of affairs.last_img read more
